The
first rule about our business is “know who you are dealing
with”. You should find out whether the employment agency
is licensed. Recruiters are licensed and controlled by
the Ontario Government. Protect your rights; deal only
with a licensed agency.
The
consultant should be able to communicate with you, and
you should never feel “put off” in your dealings with
this person. In addition, the recruiter is your agent,
in every sense of the word. They represent you to your
prospective and future employer. The recruiter should
be knowledgeable about both the industry and company.
He or she should be aware of trends in the company, current
on compensation standards, knowledgeable about technology,
and certain about the labour market for your skills.
You
should feel comfortable relying on their expertise. Recruiters
are in the job market everyday, and good ones will talk
about its pulse. Sometimes it’s pounding, rapid and fast;
other times it’s slow, almost comatose. Timing is everything.
When the time comes to move, you need to find someone
who is feeling a fast pulse, with lots of things happening.
Also, make sure that you locate someone with excellent
negotiation skills. Someone who coincidentally is totally
supportive of your career objectives. Finally, that person
should be prompt and respectful in all dealings with you,
and able to answer most of your career and company related
questions.
Remember
that the recruiter is your ally in the job search process.
You should expect coaching on your resume and interview
skills, and good, honest advice about career prospects.
A good recruiter will expect you to be demanding. If possible,
you should try to visit your recruiter at their place
of work. Talk casually with your agent and get a “feel”
about this person. Go with your gut instinct. Studies
have shown that in over 80% of the cases, your initial
reading of the person or situation is the most accurate.
First impressions not only count, they totally matter.
Why
is this important? Consider this point – In today’s market,
where there is a huge demand for qualified system’s people,
you need a consultant with radar. Someone who is looking
well ahead, able to identify new opportunities, turn you
on to new developments, and go to bat for you to protect
your skills, job and quality of life.
It
is our goal to treat you well, keep you informed of developments
in the job market, new trends in compensation structures,
and new opportunities. We are there everyday, looking
at the information systems market, talking to employers
and leading edge businesses.
