Limit
the Number of Recruiters You deal With
The final rule is to limit
the number of recruiters you are dealing with. We ideally
would like to be the only one, but when you are hot to
make a change, you will respond to several ads in the
paper. Most of those ads are posted by recruiters.
But here’s
a fact. There are only so many information systems jobs
in the Greater Toronto Area. Many of the advertisements
are duplicates, and several agencies will be working to
fill the same job order. Why? It makes sense for employers
to create competition amongst recruitment agencies to
drive down the service fee and to ensure the best of the
best are located. Competition is healthy in all industries.
So, what
happens when you deal with multiple recruiters? You might
create an awkward situation for yourself, and for your
agent. Consider this actual and constantly recurring situation.
You send in a resume to cover an ad in the paper. A couple
weeks go by, you hear nothing and you decide to check
out another agency. These guys really work hard for you,
put a lot of time in for you, and present you to a great
employer. You get the job, and guess what… that ad you
replied to by sending in your resume was for the same
job. The other agency did nothing for you, but they were
first in the door with your resume. The cardinal rule
of recruiting is this: first in gets the fee. The agency
that did all the work for you loses out and gets nothing.
